My father died suddenly at just forty-seven, and the shock of it split my life in two. Grief settled into the walls of the house like dust, heavy and unavoidable.

What hurt almost as much as losing him was watching my stepmother—who had been part of our lives for fourteen years—pack her things the very next day. She didn’t cry in front of me. She moved quietly, efficiently, taking her teenage son with her, leaving behind rooms that still smelled like my father.
