RNZ+1 He began his film-career behind the scenes \u2014 <strong>working in commercials, photography, and eventually as boom operator and assistant director.<\/strong><br>His debut feature film, Once Were Warriors (1994), was a raw and emotionally powerful look at a M\u0101ori family\u2019s struggles in South Auckland.
